Leadership Opportunities
Q. What type of professional leadership opportunities does ESM Association offer?
A. Chapters are extremely important to ESM Association. Chapters form the foundation of local networking that members continuously site as being most valuable to them. Chapters constantly are looking for leadership in the form of Board structure, membership development, meeting organization, mailings, sponsorships, and more. Contact ESM Association Headquarters to see if there’s a Chapter in your area. If there isn’t a chapter, ESM Association Headquarters can help you get one started through online local communities or a traditional Chapter that meets regularly.
The ESM Association National Board of Directors is another level of leadership. There are several Board committees including Awards, Certification, Conference, Marketing, and Foundation. The Board of Directors meets three times a year—in late winter or early spring, summer and in the fall, just prior to the Annual Conference & Exhibit. Committees may connect via conference calls between Board meetings, and Board members take away tasks to be completed between meetings as well. If you are interested in serving on the Board, please call ESM Association Headquarters at 630-559-0020 or e-mail esmahq@esmassn.org. You also may contact a current Board member. ESM Association does not cover travel expenses.
Members also can develop leadership skills outside of the parameters of serving on a local or national Board. ESM Association is continuously looking for sponsorships. Assume a leadership role by:
• Writing an article for Employee Services Management Magazine
• Writing an ESM Association Monograph
• Sponsoring an Audio Conference
• Sponsoring a session, meal, speaker, or event at the Annual Conference & Exhibit
• Sponsoring conference tote bags, pens, programs, copies, audio visual needs, or computer services
• Sponsoring an e-mail or mailing to our members
• Participating in the ESM Association Awards and/or Certification programs
You and your company receive recognition as a leader in the employee services field for these sponsorships.
Q. What do I need to do to be considered for a Chapter leadership position?
A. If an ESM Association Chapter is available in your area, mention your interest to your local President or Board.
If you do not have a Chapter in your area, or you’re not sure who your Chapter Board members are, please contact ESM Association Headquarters.
Q. What is the process for nominating ESM Association National Board of Director members?
A. Each year, ESM Association sends a call for nominations. A member can nominate himself/herself or nominate a peer. Nominations are due each September, but are accepted at any time during the year. Members can submit their nominations along with the nominee’s name and company to ESM Association’s current Nominating Committee Chair. Submissions also can be made to ESM Association Headquarters by fax at 630-559-0025 or e-mail at esmahq@esmassn.org.
National Board of Director positions require a two-year term usually beginning in January. The following qualifications are necessary:
• Candidates must obtain written permission from their employer stating their commitment of time and financial support.
• Only persons holding General, Chapter Organizational, Academic, or Individual membership in the Association in good standing are eligible for election to the Director position and able to serve in that capacity on the Board. ESM Association’s CESP accreditation may be a consideration for eligibility.
• More than two ESM Association members from a particular company, enterprise, business organization, or other entity, including any subsidiary thereof, may not concurrently serve on the Board.
When there is an open position on the National Board of Directors, the Nominating Committee reviews the lists of nominees, approaches them to determine their interest and company support and then presents them to the entire Board for a vote.
Q. What qualities and characteristics do you look for in ESM Association leaders and/or Board members?
A. There are several qualities or characteristics that the Nominating Committee looks for in potential leaders and Board members. Experience within their employee services role, time as an ESM Association member, previous leadership experience, participation in other ESM Association programs (such as Awards, Certification and Annual Conference & Exhibit attendance), voiced interest in serving on the Board or taking on a leadership role, and among the most important attributes, enthusiasm for the employee services industry. ESM Association asks Board members to obtain written approval from their management to participate, including time and financial support to attend meetings.
Q. Where can I go for more information?
A. Call ESM Association Headquarters at 630-559-0020 or e-mail esmahq@esmassn.org if you have any additional questions or if you would like more information. You also may contact current Board members. For a complete list of 2008 Board members and their contact information, visit www.esmassn.org.
